Yorkshire law firm Lupton Fawcett is supporting a new national voucher scheme to help families with the cost of mediation.

The £1 million scheme has been launched by the Ministry of Justice and is being administered by the Family Mediation Council.

The purpose of the scheme is to promote the benefits of mediation and divert matters where appropriate away from the family courts. The scheme will offer mediation participants a financial contribution of up to £500 per family towards the total cost of their mediation.

Richard Buckley, associate, mediator and collaborative lawyer at Lupton Fawcett, said: “Mediation is recommended to resolve disputes over childcare arrangements. It is preferable in the vast majority of cases.

“Mediation enables families to resolve issues more quickly and cheaply rather than going to court. The voucher scheme will encourage families to consider their options as well as helping free up space for cases in the court system.”

Payment of the vouchers will be made directly to mediation providers by the Family Mediation Council. Lupton Fawcett is offering online mediation sessions in line with Covid-19 guidelines.
