Two York based lawyers and two employees of a Yorkshire based housebuilder are taking part in a gruelling 1,000-mile challenge to help raise money for St Leonard’s Hospice in York.

The riders; Simon Usher (Managing Director for Persimmon Homes Yorkshire), Simon Winship (and Commercial Manager), Jonathan Moore, Director at Lupton Fawcett and Dan Jones (Criminal Prosecutor) have decided to ditch their suits and ties for the bike and saddle as part of a marathon cycle fundraiser between Land’s End and John O’Groats.

Commencing on Saturday 1st July, (the same day as the Tour de France’s Grand Depart), this group of four like-minded people from York will complete the epic journey in just ten days.

Simon Usher said: “Everyone taking part in the ride enjoys cycling and we’ve been training as much as our modern working family lives will allow for what is sure to be a real test of endurance.

Three years ago I wasn’t fit at all, but after taking part in a Total Warrior obstacle course to help raise for funds for St Leonard’s Hospice and my local school, I became hooked on living a more active lifestyle.

I know so many people who say that the support of St Leonard’s has been there for them and their families over the years, so supporting such a great cause was an easy decision to make.

Starting at Land’s End each day will be an average trip of 100 miles. Having left the hills of Devon and Cornwall, a comparatively flat few days will follow before the hills (and mountains) of the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands test the legs, endurance and will of the riders.

Simon Winship added:  “We’ve been pushing to raise funds over the past few months and have so far managed to raise £3,865 of our new £5,000 target, which is amazing news. We’re hoping by the time we finish we would have hit our target figure.”

Dan Jones who works for the Criminal Prosecution Service added “We’re all really looking forward to the challenge ahead, it’s the first time any of us has been involved in a ride of this scale and it will take some real teamwork to get us over the finishing line, any support we may receive would be very much appreciated.”

A third, Simon Mountford also from York, and his whippet Bob, will be also making the marathon joinery in the support van, and will be boiling up extra pasta and rice every night to keep the team fuelled!

St Leonard’s Hospice is an independent charity, providing specialist palliative care and support for the local people of York and surrounding area with life limiting illnesses.

They have an In-patient Unit, Sunflower Centre and Hospice@Home service and aim to give patients the best quality of life possible. The charity relies heavily on the generosity of the public to help raise over £5million it cost to run St Leonard’s Hospice each year.
