The basics of UK and EU Competition Law

Full Day course

Overview

This informative full day session with interactive group sessions has been created to provide a comprehensive introduction to the laws about price fixing, customer sharing arrangements, and how agreements which restrict competition are controlled or outlawed. The course will also provide a comprehensive introduction to how competition law applies to business with large market share – the so-called ‘dominant’ market players – and the risks that they face even if small and in niche markets.

Module aims

This module aims to provide participants with a thorough introduction to the key concepts of UK and EU competition law including the knowledge and understanding they need of: 

  1. situations when competition law may come into play and what are the related risks.
  2. the various exemptions and published guidance which can be used to reduce the risk of competition law being breached;
  3. the fines, penalties, and other sanctions for breach of competition law; and
  4. the criminal UK cartel offence relevant to types of collusion including price fixing. 

Learning outcomes

By the end of this module, participants will: 

  • understand the key concepts that underpin UK and EU competition law;
  • understand when a risk of a competition law breach might occur and the mitigations available which might apply;
  • understand the UK cartel criminal offence so that they can avoid committing the offence and risking a term in prison;
  • be able to respond to ‘competition law’ points made during negotiations by being able to spot the genuine points from the bluster;
  • be able to use the learning they have acquired to add value to their businesses such as by improving internal procedures and policies, identifying where agreements may need to be changed and so on; and
  • have had the chance to discuss and argue positions giving them the confidence to apply what they have learned in a live environment.

    with substantial shares of the market (as defined by the Competition regulators).

The Cost

Our standard charge is £200 plus VAT per delegate for a full day course, if it is being held at our premises or a venue close to our offices.  In addition, we do offer three for the price of two rates.

For a half day course, our fees are £125 plus VAT per delegate.

Should you require the course to be held in-house at your premises, then the fee would be £2,000 plus VAT for up to 12 attendees.  Should your premises be in London, then the fee would be £2500 plus VAT plus travel and hotel costs. 

For a half day course, our fee would be £1250 or £1500 for London plus travel costs.
