The Route

58 MILES • 4174 FT • Beautiful Scenery • Technical Challenge

The Yorkshire Dales is one of the finest landscapes in the country; marvellous limestone formations; heather clad moorlands; winding valley bottoms full of meadows; dry stone walls and scattered with field barns.

All this combines to provide us with the perfect setting for our fabulous cycling event. From gentle routes in the valleys to some steep climbs and technical descents over the moorland that separates them. This promises to be a challenging yet rewarding opportunity for all.

As we head out from our base at Ilkley Rugby Club, we begin the glorious 58 miles through the best and some of the toughest the Yorkshire Dales has to offer.

  • Our route takes us past Ilkley Golf Club and into the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

  • Past historic Bolton Abbey, down past the Cavendish Pavilion Cafe over The Strid on to Appletreewick heading north west towards Grassington.

  • Once through Grassington the route heads off north running adjacent to the River Wharfe through the scenic Upper Wharfedale valley and past the imposing Kilnsey Cragg.

  • A drink and food stop at the picturesque picnic spot at High Wind Bank will provide some welcome sustenance before turning right in Arncliffe village at the foot of Littondale and climbing out up the hillside passing by Darnbrook Fell heading south towards Malham Tarn.

  • The route continues down the steep incline passing Malham Cove descending into Malham village.

  • Lunch stop is at the popular cyclist watering hole at Town End Farm Shop at Airton.

  • On our way back to Ilkley, we head through Winterburn and Hetton before taking the narrow back road at Cracoe heading to Burnsall.

  • From Burnsall the route follows the B6160 back to Bolton Abbey for the final stretch over Langbar and back through Middleton passing Middleton Lodge back to Ilkley Rugby Club.
