Our Lawyers In Sheffield: Lupton Facwett

If your enquiry relates to an on-going matter please email the fee-earner directly to avoid any delay in our response. We do not accept service of any process via this site.

Sheffield is a city in South Yorkshire, with a population of more than 570,000.

With its roots placed firmly in the industrial revolution, and is famous worldwide for its cutlery,  Sheffield is also credited as being the birthplace of football (soccer) with the creation of The Sheffield Rules and Sheffield FC (the world’s oldest football club) in 1857.

The Sheffield of today is a vibrant and innovative city and one of the greenest in the UK. The landscape benefits from many parks and gardens. It also merges into the Peak District National Park, which lies within its borders.

Business Landscape

Historically speaking, Sheffield is known as the Steel City, due to its role at the forefront of steel production in the 18th and 19thcenturies. Fast forward to today and Sheffield is a city experiencing a renaissance with the digital, creative and technology industries just some of the major growth areas.

Manufacturing remains an extremely important industry within the city and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (NAMRC) at the University of Sheffield are having a major international impact, producing, among other things, parts for the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner and for Formula One.

Sheffield boasts two world-class universities, bringing over 58,000 students to the city each year. The University of Sheffield is a member of the prestigious Russell Group, while the business-focused approach of Sheffield Hallam University enables it to work closely with major industry leaders such as Sony, Microsoft, Cisco and BP.

Major employers in the city include HSBC, Boeing, Rolls Royce, Sky and BT, although the public sector is still the largest employer in the city.

Culture and Social Scene

Sheffield is renowned for its sporting heritage and is home to Sheffield United FC, Sheffield Wednesday FC and the World Snooker Championship at the iconic Crucible Theatre.

The Crucible helps to make up the largest theatre complex outside London along with the Lyceum Theatre. Together they offer a wide programme of events including West End musicals, cutting-edge drama and home-grown performances.

With its many theatres, museums, galleries, music festivals and sporting events, the city undoubtedly has an enviable cultural programme.

Music is in the city’s blood with acts such as Arctic Monkeys, Pulp, Def Leppard, The Human League and  Joe Cocker all originating here so it’s no surprise that there is a thriving music scene with numerous venues hosting bands, solo artists and DJs throughout the year.

Legal Services and cases in Sheffield

Sheffield is currently in the midst of major regeneration and redevelopment work. Office and residential space in the city is now at a premium and property law is a key part of the legal landscape. The residential property market is also very active.  Our specialist lawyers represent numerous clients on a range of issues including conveyancing, property development and planning and property disputes.

With the city’s large-scale regeneration comes an increased number of businesses setting up and moving in. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are at the heart of the Sheffield City Region’s economy and Lupton Fawcett represents a high number of these, including many family-owned businesses, on different aspects of corporate/commercial and employment law.

It is important that we get to know our clients really well and pride ourselves on excellent communication and relations with you. We like to think of ourselves as an extension of your business and can take care of all your legal requirements at every stage.

Another element to the longer-term plans for Sheffield is the proposed HS2 high-speed rail line, which is due to come to the city in 2033. Although reception to the plans has been largely positive, there have been a number of legal challenges along the way which have centred around environmental disputes, contract issues and planning problems. With the first phase of the railway not set to open for another decade, this is an issue that is likely to continue for some time.

Kelly Mills

Lupton Fawcett’s Family team, in particular Richard Buckley, have consistently provided a service that was not only strong, balanced and responsive but also never lost sight of the deeply personal and emotional nature of my case.

Mr Shaw

It has been a real pleasure working with you in the frame of the asset purchase deal and the sublease we closed in February 2019. Sometimes it was a very stressful dossier, because of all the changes and extra’s the other parties requested. But you took away a lot of worries and handled it so well together with your colleagues at LF! We appreciate your immediate attention each time we have a question, your professionalism, your personal approach and last but not least your kindness and your positive attitude. We enjoy working together with you and your colleagues for our future legal issues.

Tricia Carter has a long association with Sheffield Mencap and Gateway and we're very glad to know her. For many years she has met regularly with groups of parent carers during the day and in evenings to answer questions about ways of leaving money and property through wills and trusts to people with learning disabilities. The families I work with always get a lot from her sessions and she is careful to always give impartial, sensible advice. I have only ever had extremely positive feedback from family carers who've come to the sessions and I've learnt a lot over the years from her too.

Dalia Magrill

Sheffield Mencap and Gateway

Tricia Carter provided me with an exceptional service in a very timely manner, continually demonstrating an exceptional knowledge of legislation, guiding me through the options available to me and my circumstances. I would recommend Tricia and the professional services she offers to everyone.

Tricia is always very pleased to receive a 'thank you letter' from a client at the conclusion of a matter. Amongst these have been "many thanks indeed for the immediate help and support", and "thank you for looking after us at this time in a friendly and compassionate manner."

Simon is listed as a key individual in his field in The Legal 500 UK. In recent editions he has been described as "highly rated by clients."

The Legal 500 UK

I just want to express my thanks, coupled with my admiration, for what you have done for me and for my family. To bring home the bacon after all these years of frustration and enforced despair over my unfortunate financial relationship with an old associate and supposed friend is something of a miracle – my daughter and others have long consoled me by writing off the whole sorry business……..and now you and Natasha have made them all eat their words! I am smiling a lot.

Legal 500, November 2018

We have known the Corporate Team at Lupton Fawcett for many years and they have assisted the Crossroads Group on a number of commercial transactions. The most recent acquisition by the Group was, in my experience, one of the most complicated and sensitive deals that I have been involved with. The Corporate Team, led by Michele Phillips, performed in a highly professional and efficient manner and I have no doubt that their assistance was a major contributory factor in us closing our latest acquisition deal.

Andrew Fletcher

Crossroads Group Limited

From the outset, Meghan helped put me more at ease, by explaining the process in simple terms which before seemed like a very daunting task. She was calm and professional during my interview, which helped as the policeman had little understanding of how the law works in these situations. Meghan looked through my case and really helped me through the next steps towards court. I received very good advice at court. Meghan's knowledge of the law helped me achieve the result I needed to retain my license and be able to carry on with my busy life. My family, staff and I will be forever grateful.

Pete Gunson

Lupton Fawcett's Coporate tax department, headed by Julian Moran, is highlighted for its expertise.

I have had the pleasure of working with Julian for the last 18 months and he has always worked to the highest professional standards. VAT is a minefield which requires safe navigation and with Julian on your team, you can reach the other side not only intact, but with more than you started. Always thorough and thinks outside the box – just what you really need.

Phil Whitfield, Executive Chairman

Humdinger Ltd

I am delighted that my sister recommended Joss and your firm to me - at the time I did not realise how important it was going to be to have specialists in tax, trusts as well as corporate law and the fact that you had all three specialisms and worked so well together made the whole process far simpler for me…. Having in the past worked in house at a law firm for seven years and worked closely with lots of different law firms since, I know that the way you work is special.

I just wanted to thank you for help. The issue was a serious one for us as it may have caused embarrassment and potential liability in our supply chain. Your wise counsel, in-depth knowledge of trademark law, and firm but commercial approach enabled us to resolve this matter both quickly and successfully and avoiding any liability for us and our business partners. Achieving an amicable settlement was a real success and we are delighted with the outcome.

Steve Walton, Finance Director

I have worked with John for a number of years and can say that he personifies a rare mix of an excellent legal technician and pragmatic, commercially astute businessman. John is a consummate diplomat, having the knowledge and experience to read a situation to perfection, and to use the appropriate force for the circumstances in hand. Many years ago I was on the opposite side to John in a hard-fought contentious matter. It was a very uncomfortable place to be. I can trust John to deliver when called upon. I therefore have absolutely no hesitation in recommending John.

Ann Critchell-Ward

VP Intellectual Property, TomTom

I found John Sykes to be a skilful lawyer, commercially astute, dedicated and hard working, with good judgement, combined with detailed knowledge of - for us - copyright law, he did a good job for us, managed the team well on the case, and I would recommend him without hesitation

I would just like to write a few lines on the service I have received. From the very outset, Meghan helped put me more at ease, by explaining the process in simple terms of which before, seemed like a very daunting task. She was very calm and professional during my interview, which helped as the policeman had little understanding of how the law works in these situations. Since joining Lupton Fawcett, I have nothing but praise for the way they have dealt with my affairs. Sarah (Sargent) and her team have handled several difficult transfers which they inherited from my previous solicitors (for whom I had lost all confidence in). Going forward, I have numerous property sales in 2017 and a large development of 14 executive houses which will be ongoing for the next 2-3 years. I'm looking forward to the future knowing that my legal requirements are in the hands of a competent team. I have recommended Sarah to several of my friends and business associates
