Lupton Fawcett lawyer takes part in new Archbishop’s confirmation service

Louise was present at the ceremony in her role as Registrar for the Diocese and Province of York.  Specifically, her part in the proceedings was to introduce the new Archbishop as his legal advocate, and to ensure that he gave his consent to his appointment.

The ceremony, which is based on legislation passed by Henry VIII in 1533, was specially adapted so that it could be conducted by Zoom during the coronavirus lockdown.  It is the first time that a ceremony of this kind has been conducted remotely.

Lupton Fawcett’s ecclesiastical law practice is the largest in the north of England.

Partner Louise was appointed Registrar for the Diocese of York and legal secretary to the Archbishop in November last year, and Registrar of the Province of York in February this year.

A lawyer with more than 25 years’ experience as a solicitor she advises on legal issues facing clergy, parishes and dioceses in the Church of England, as well as delivering seminars and training for ecclesiastical clients.

Louise is also registrar of the Diocese of Sodor and Man and a deputy registrar in the Dioceses of Leeds and Blackburn.

Louise said: “I am privileged to serve the church in the exciting and fulfilling role of Diocesan and Provincial Registrar and it was an absolute pleasure to take part in the ceremony confirming Stephen Cottrell as the new Archbishop of York. I am very much looking forward to continuing to work with the new Archbishop, as well as the staff at Bishopthorpe and the Diocesan Office.”

Stephen Cottrell is the 98th Archbishop of York.
