Recognising Trade Unions
In spite of the relative decline in Trade Union membership numbers over recent years, there is no doubt that they still feature heavily on the industrial landscape.
If they have a sufficient number of members within your business or organisation Trade Unions may seek formal recognition in order to conduct collective bargaining on behalf of a group of workers. To obtain recognition, the union must formally apply in writing to management or the owners of the business. If that is unsuccessful, the union must submit an application for recognition to the Central Arbitration Committee.
Collective Bargaining
If a union is successful in obtaining recognition, it will then have the right to discuss the terms and conditions of their employment, otherwise known as ‘collective bargaining’.
Collective bargaining may cover issues such as:
- Pay
- Hours
- Holidays
